High School Academics

In a supportive and caring environment, scholars are expected to dive into content areas, develop critical thinking skills, and develop fluency in reading, writing, listening and speaking in every class. Our core courses are aligned with the Common Core and Regents, AP, and SAT exams.

Subjects

English+

Students study literature and nonfiction writing from around the world and learn to understand and appreciate complex texts. Every student works to expand upon and better articulate their ideas through discussion and writing. IAL uses the Hochman Method through The Writing Revolution to teach writing. IAL offers two Advanced Placement courses for juniors and seniors: AP Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition.
Health and Physical Education+

We seek to improve the physical fitness of students, as well as empower them to make healthy life choices. Students are challenged to push themselves, both physically and mentally. Physical Education is a mandatory course every year of high school.
History and Social Sciences+

Students study history, civics, economics, geography, and the social sciences. They are challenged to think about bias and perspective, and work to understand historical causation and contextualization. Students may take AP U.S. History in the 11th grade.
Leadership Courses +

The Leadership courses begin in 9th grade, culminating in a Capstone Seminar in senior year. True to our mission of cultivating agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development, and college preparedness, the Leadership courses explicitly examine what leadership is and can be. Beginning with examining leadership qualities and young people around the world who have shown great leadership, students then dig into real-world issues and problems, like poverty, clean water, racism, and gender equality. 9th and 10th graders focus on these issues in a global and local context. In 11th grade, students explore the American socio economic landscape, examining the history of segregation and wealth creation in the United States. In all of these writing-based courses, students develop questions, conduct research and interviews, write, and present their work. The Senior Capstone is a college-level seminar in which students prepare a research paper with an oral presentation on a topic of their choice.
Literacy+

All students who enter IAL receive literacy evaluation and support. Each student is assessed individually and then placed in the most appropriate literacy class setting. Supports include Wilson, Just Words, or an additional Reading Intervention class. English Language Learners also receive specialized support through ENL classes as well as Just Words, if needed. IAL is committed to ensuring that every student graduates high school prepared for college level reading and writing.
Mathematics+

Courses provide students with a broad and solid set of skills around mathematical reasoning and problem solving. Students explore both theoretical and real-world problems. Classes are organized to meet each student’s pacing needs and mode of engagement in the learning process. The math sequence is designed to prepare students for college-level math, and includes Precalculus and Statistics.
Science+

Through a rich life and physical sciences curriculum, students learn to apply the scientific method to problems, perform hands-on experiments to test hypotheses, explore ways to accurately collect and analyze data, and develop skills in presenting research findings. IAL currently offers the following sequence for high school: Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Environmental Science.
World Languages+

We believe that comprehension of multiple languages strengthens academic language, literacy, and cultural knowledge. Courses challenge both native and non-native speakers and build skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Currently students may take three years of Spanish, allowing them to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma if they meet all of the requirements.

Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities

We provide a variety of enrichment and extracurricular activities outside standard academic classes. These activities are designed to provide youth with the opportunity for experiential learning, character building, and overall academic improvement.

College & Career Success

The team of College & Career Success counselors help students to prepare for and select the right college or career based on their academic standing, character skills, and interests and passions. Scholars are taken on college visits, and receive help with college and financial aid applications.
