Families

Our mission is to prepare every scholar to succeed in the college and career of his or her choice. We have high academic expectations for all our students and emphasize community service, participation in a variety of extracurricular activities, and parent engagement to help our students develop into well-rounded leaders.

Family Council

The Inwood Academy Family Council is a group of family leaders who work to develop an active and involved family body and serves as an avenue of communication between families, administration, and faculty. In loving memory of Altagracia Cassadean, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge her leadership, love, and dedication to our team. She was the President and Founder of the Together We Can support group for parents of IAL. We have fond memories of Altagracia and miss her dearly. Our condolences to her family and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her. IAL elections will be held for parent leadership positions in January, and in the interim, Ms. Wanda Mora will be leading the Family Council and Ms. Carmen Pichardo will be leading Together We Can. For more information view the Family Council Bylaws in English or Spanish. Questions? Please contact Tatiana Mahoney Monday-Friday from 8 am - 4 pm at 646-906-4111.

Family Connections

Our Family Room is currently closed due to COVID-19, but families interact daily via WhatsApp leadership groups to share resources and receive support. Families created the Entrepreneur Leaders group to support small businesses during the pandemic. Caregivers receive an IAL News Brief every other Wednesday at noon, which provides a platform for families to hear school updates and share ideas, concerns, and hopes for the future. This programming is in place so that all of our students can receive the best academic and services available.

Week of Service

Family Week of Service is a time for students and staff to exemplify leadership by spreading awareness about an issue or engaging in community service projects. This year, we collaborated with World Vision to sort and pack boxes of food and other items which will be distributed to kids worldwide. This experiential learning opportunity not only helps to develop student character, but it also allows us to deepen our relationships with students and their families. Please follow us on social media to see photos of this experience and to stay up to date on events.

Advocacy

Inwood Academy was originally chartered in 2010 and we serve grades 5-12 in two buildings, both of which are private in spaces. IAL is seeking to provide all elementary school grades, adding 550 students over 4 years in grades K-4 beginning in 2022-23. The proposed elementary school would be in a private space, which would help Community School District (CSD) 6 reduce overcrowding and reduce class size. The average elementary school enrollment in CSD 6 is 106%, and the DOE has no new seats planned. Listen to what our families are saying about our school here.

English Language Learners

In 2009, Inwood Academy successfully lobbied for a change in the New York state law that allows us to give preference in our lottery to students speaking English as a New Language (ENL). Today, our total enrollment is 916 students, Student with Disability (24.4%), English Language Learner (13.3%) and Emotional Disturbance (88%) representation that meets or exceeds those populations in CSD 6. We graduated our first high school class in 2018, and over the past three years has a graduation rate of 92%-- which exceeds the rate for CSD 6, NYC, and NYS—quite an accomplishment, since most 5th graders enter IAL below grade level in math and ELA.
