At Inwood Academy for Leadership, we believe in the power of service to transform communities and instill a sense of purpose in our students. Our mission is to empower students to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development, and college preparedness. One of the ways we  empower our trailblazers is through our annual Week of Service which was held from March 18 – 22nd.

“Week of Service is our school-wide opportunity to point our students towards service work, and talk to them about why it’s important to serve our community,” says our Director of School Culture and Leadership Development, Mary Hackett. “Community Focused Leadership doesn’t just live in the week of service, but is a 5-12 opportunity for students to spend intentional time thinking about their community, and creative ways they can serve”. Our recent week of service exemplified this commitment as our middle and high school students came together to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Here are some of our accomplishments:

  • Trailblazers expressed their gratitude by writing over 60 heartfelt letters to members of the armed services and first responders, acknowledging their selfless dedication to keeping our communities safe.
  • Our commitment to literacy was evident as our students built and decorated six mini-loaner libraries, promoting accessibility to books within our community. Furthermore, our middle schoolers created five inspiring posters focused on mental health awareness, which will adorn our school halls, spreading messages of positivity and growth mindset.
  • Six local businesses received personalized thank-you notes, demonstrating our appreciation for their invaluable contributions. Our students love to celebrate the businesses that are the backbone of our community.
  • In the spirit of environmental stewardship, high school students, staff and families dedicated their time to revitalize the Fairview Garden Lot. They transformed it into a beautiful oasis by cleaning, painting, and planting flowers—a testament to their dedication to enhancing public spaces. Additionally, they took on the task of cleaning Amelia Gorman Park, ensuring that it remains a welcoming environment for all.
  • In a gesture of support for newcomers to the United States, essential items were generously donated to The Open Door organization. This act of kindness reflects our commitment to inclusivity and support for all members of our community.

We concluded our week of service by celebrating the contributions made during our Dollar Dress Down initiative. Our students raised an impressive $2,175.50, which will be directed towards further enhancing the Fairview Garden Lot Project, showcasing our dedication to sustainable community improvement. Students presented a check at our Pep Rally, symbolizing our commitment to making a positive impact in our community.

Every student at Inwood Academy actively participated in service activities, reinforcing the importance of community-focused leadership and the impact of collective action. This recap serves as a testament to the values we hold dear at Inwood Academy for Leadership. Our commitment to service, compassion, and community engagement permeates every aspect of our educational approach. We invite you to join us in our mission to empower the next generation of compassionate leaders who are dedicated to making a positive impact in the world.
