At Inwood Academy for Leadership, we believe that learning shouldn’t be limited to the classroom. True understanding happens when students can see, touch, and experience the very places where history was made.
This year, we’re inviting our community to help us make that possible.
We are raising funds to provide our students with experiential learning trips to some of the most important historical sites in the Northeast — including Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. These are not just field trips. They are opportunities for our students to walk the grounds where history unfolded, to connect what they’ve read with what they see, and to build the background knowledge that fuels deeper learning in every subject.
Research shows that students with strong background knowledge are better readers, writers, and thinkers. Our own results at Inwood Academy show that when students are given meaningful learning experiences, they rise:
- 62% of our 1st graders grew two grade levels in math — progress families can see at home.
- 82% of our 8th graders passed the Algebra I Regents, and half of all 8th grade students passed two Regents exams before entering high school.
- At the high school level, our graduation rate averages 93%, consistently exceeding the city (83%), district (85%), and state (86%) averages — proof that every opportunity we provide translates into long-term success.
When students can connect new information to real experiences, they comprehend more deeply, retain more meaningfully, and gain confidence in their academic journey. A visit to the Lincoln Memorial or the fields of Gettysburg transforms textbook facts into lasting understanding — and helps our students see themselves as part of the ongoing story of our nation.
