At Inwood Academy for Leadership (IAL), our mission is to empower students to be agents of change through community-focused leadership, character development, and college and career readiness. Few experiences activate that vision more profoundly—or memorably—than our annual Roots and Recipes Contest. This year’s event didn’t just bring people together; it created lasting emotional moments that reinforce why belonging matters.

From the moment families arrived, a wave of warmth and familiarity filled the air. Students beamed in their Roots and Recipes shirts, drawing attention and sparking smiles. The gym transformed into a multisensory memory: vibrant visuals, the comforting sounds of chatter and laughter, and the rich aroma of family recipes cooking up connection. Events that engage the senses and emotions tend to stay with us, and this night was one of those special occasions.

With 20 contestants, each dish told a story. Whether it was a family drawing cultural connections between Italy and the Dominican Republic or first-time participants bravely sharing their heritage, each plate invited guests into personal histories. These shared experiences opened hearts and helped us understand one another on a deeper level.

Judges and guests alike delighted in standout entries. Emmanuel (8th grade) won first place with Bollos de Maíz & Pasta. Kayla (6th), Stephanie (7th), and Stacey (9th) captured second with their Tacos Dorados. Third place ended in a heartfelt tie between duos presenting Sancocho and Bandera Dominicana. Bernys (7th) earned the crowd’s Popular Vote with Carne Ripiada & Torta de Maíz. Each name, each dish, became a memory worth cherishing.

But what truly elevated the night were the unexpected and uplifting surprises. Whether it was a moving student performance, the energy of student MCs navigating the event in two languages, or a spontaneous musical gift from a family member, these moments added a unique magic and deepened our sense of connection.

A new tradition, the Flan FACE-Off, brought sweet suspense as 14 entries vied for the title. The winner, Solangel Lagares, beamed with pride, representing the Elementary School while celebrating both of her daughters. It was a proud moment for her and a delight for everyone who cheered her on.

Behind the scenes, more than ten student volunteers ensured everything ran smoothly. The Culture Team, Operations crew, Family Council, and a dedicated planning team wove the fabric of the event with care and joy. Their effort showed how working together can spark joy and build pride.

The panel of judges—business owners, nonprofit leaders, a pastry chef—brought validation and encouragement. Their presence made the students feel seen and appreciated, affirming the value of their efforts.

Roots and Recipes isn’t just an event. It’s a community ritual that leaves a lasting imprint on our students and families. These experiences shape identity, ignite pride, and plant the seeds of lifelong leadership.

To those who helped make this event a success, thank you. And to those who missed it, we hope you’ll join us next year.
